Guatemala: National director

Chemonics seeks a national director for the anticipated five-year, $20-25 million USAID Regional Human Rights and Democracy Activity in Central America. This assistance activity will work to strengthen human rights protection systems through regional engagement in targeted countries in Central America, including El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. The project will also support discrete activities in Mexico and Nicaragua. The primary goal of the project is to improve national human rights protections systems and empower actors to better fulfill their roles in (1) providing oversight, (2) ensuring accountability, (3) upholding the principle of non-discrimination and other human rights standards, (4) addressing needs of victims, and (5) improving independence, accountability, efficiency, and effectiveness. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead country-level human rights activities for the project and coordinate activities at the regional level with program leadership in El Salvador
  • Work closely with the program's chief of party and deputy chief of party to ensure appropriate implementation of program strategy in assigned country
  • Supervise program staff and oversee program activities in assigned country
  • Communicate with other national directors and chief of party and deputy chief of party to coordinate regional activities
  • Foster and maintain collaborative relationships with government officials, key stakeholders, and other implementing partners in assigned country
  • Contribute to quality control and timeliness of all deliverables

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in human rights, law, public administration, international relations, or other related field or five years of experience directing democracy and governance or human rights projects in Honduras, Guatemala, or Nicaragua
  • Minimum of eight years of experience in human rights work in either Honduras, Guatemala, or Nicaragua
  • Experience effectively working with local government structures, senior government officials, civil society actors, and other donors
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Fluency in Spanish and English
